AttheoutbreakofWorldWarI,HarryFarr,whowas23,joinedtheBritisharmy,andfoughtinthetrenches.InMay1915,hecollapsedwithstrongconvulsions.Inhospital,heshookallthetime,andcouldnotevenholdapen.Hissymptomswereconsistentwithshellshock.Despitethis,hewassentbacktothefront.Afterseveralmonthsoffighting,heaskedtoseeamedicalorderly,butwasrefused.
InSeptember1916,Farrrefusedtogotothetrenches.Hewascourt-martialled,foundguiltyof"misbehavingbeforetheenemyinsuchamannerastoshowcowardice",andsentencedtobeexecuted.Thetriallastedonly20minutes.

第一次世界大戰爆發時，二十三歲的哈利．法爾加入英軍，據戰壕對敵。一九一五年五月，他不支倒下，身體劇烈抽搐，送到醫院後，還是不住顫抖，連筆都拿不穩，看病徵，是患了彈震症。但他還是被遣回前線，打仗打了幾個月，要求看醫療護理員，卻遭拒絕。
一九一六年九月，法爾不肯上戰壕，被軍事審訊。軍事法庭認為他犯了「敵人面前示怯」罪，判處死刑。審訊前後不過二十分鐘。
法爾槍斃時，拒絕蒙上眼睛。行刑隊員約翰．萊斯特一九九九年去世前憶述當時情景：「他兩眼含淚，我也淚盈兩眼。」
