拿破崙病了，痔瘡和膀胱感染十分嚴重，令他痛楚難堪，服了些鴉片，以致很晚才能成眠，失去了應是勝敗攸關的幾小時。開戰的早上，他痛得幾乎跨不上馬，更無法親自察看戰場。而鴉片也可能迷糊了他的判斷力。
於是，普魯士軍隊將近黃昏開到戰場，發動決勝的反擊，拿破崙帝國就告土崩瓦解。
