Churchillknewbeforehand,throughUltra*intercepts,thatCoventrywasabouttobebombed,buttoevacuatethepopulationortoengageingreatstrengththebomberfleetasitapproached,wastotelltheGermansthattheirEnigmasecuritysystemhadbeenpenetrated.TheBritishprimeministerthereforemadenopreparationsfortheraid.ThiswastheonlywaytoprotectUltra,oneofthemostimportantweaponsofvictoryinthewholewar.
一九四○年十一月十四日晚，德國空軍轟炸英格蘭城市科芬特里，五萬多所房屋、商店被毀，市民有五百五十四人被炸死，八百六十五人被炸傷。市內最著名的建築物聖麥可大教堂，建於十四世紀，也遭摧毀。
邱吉爾早已截取得絕密情報，知道科芬特里將被轟炸，但假如撤退居民，或大舉迎擊來犯的轟炸機隊，等於告訴德國說，他們的恩尼格瑪密碼系統已遭破解。這位英國首相於是沒有部署防範，一任德軍空襲。這是保衞絕密情報的唯一辦法，而絕密情報是全盤戰事取勝的最重要武器之一。
