Thespecialweaponsofthebattalionincludeddummyplanes,tanks,andantiaircraftguns.ToenableacombatunittochangepositionsortoattackwhiletheGermansthoughtithadnotmovedatall,the1800menofthe23rdimpersonatedentiredivisions.Theywouldmoveinatnight,andinflatetheirrubberdummies.Meanwhilethetroopstheywerereplacingsneakedaway.
Whenthe9thArmywastryingtocrosstheRhinein1945,the23rdcreatedtheillusionofahugebuildupatViersen.Consequently,therealcrossingtooktheGermanscompletelybysurprise.
