InNazi-occupiedEurope,manyresistancegroupsreceivedhelpfromtheAlliesintheformofsecretagentsandweapons.ContactwiththehomebaseinBritainwasvital,andatrainedradiooperator,transmittinginMorsecodefromasuitcase-sizedset,wasakeyneedinanygroup.Germandetectorvanscruisedthroughtownstreetsandcountryroadstotryandgetbearingsontheclandestinetransmitters.
Intheradiowar,thegreataimfortheGermanswastocapturetheoperatorandforcehimorhertosendhomefalsemessages.InthecelebratedOperationNorthPole,Germany'sAbwehrColonelGiskesachievedpreciselythis,callingforevermoresuppliestobesentintoHollandfromBritain.In1942-43nofewerthan52agentsandavasttonnageofweaponsandexplosivesweredroppedinbyBritishaircraft,onlytobenettedimmediatelyonarrival.
在納粹黨佔領的歐洲，反德組織不少都獲盟軍支援，給與特務、武器，而為了和在英國的總部聯絡，這些組織不能沒有受過訓練的無線電報收發員，用手提箱大小的收發機，發出摩爾斯電碼。德軍探測車經常巡邏市鎮、鄉村的道路，務求偵察到隱蔽的收發機所在方位。
在這場無線電戰爭之中，德軍最希望俘虜對方的無線電報收發員，逼他們向英國發出假情報。德國反間諜部上校吉斯克斯著名的北極行動，正好做到這一點，叫英國把越來越多的補給送到荷蘭，一九四二至四三年之間，至少五十二個特務以及許多公噸炸藥由英國飛機投下，一着陸就落在德軍手上。
