Thatwasnotunusual.ThemanwasErniePyle,theGI'sreporter.Hesharedthefears,thepain,andthesufferingofthemen"whodothedying".Inhiscolumn,whichranin700publications,hemadesurethatthefolksbackhomeknewexactlywhattheirfightingmenweregoingthrough.
By1945,Pylewasearningasix-figureincome.Buthecouldnotdesertthemenwhosestoriesneededtelling,soheheadedtothePacificfortheinvasionofOkinawa.On18April,hewashitbyJapanesemachine-gunfire,anddiedinstantly.Hewasforty-four.
一九四四年瑟堡爭奪戰之中，美國一輛坦克車遭德國砲彈擊中，車上將士連忙跑到附近一個門口藏身，見那裏有個也在躲避子彈的短小男人，就向他索取簽名。
這並不奇怪。那人是美軍記者厄恩利．派爾。他分擔那些「以死亡為務」者的恐懼、痛苦、煎熬，所寫專欄在七百份報刊發表，力求美國後方的人清楚了解美軍的遭遇。
一九四五年，派爾的收入已是以十萬元計。但他不能離棄戰場的軍人，覺得他們的事迹須人記述，所以前往太平洋，報道進攻沖繩島的戰事。四月十八日，他被日本機關槍擊中，當場死去，享年四十四歲。
