AtthebeginningofWorldWarII,mostBritishgeneralswerereluctanttohaveforeignfighterpilots.Butbecauseoftheneedformoresoldiers,theyhadtoallowit.Itturnedoutthatsomeofthebestperformingfighterpilotswereforeigners.IntheBattleofBritianin1940,whentheRAFbattleditoutagainsttheLuftwaffeintheskiesoversouthernEngland,thetopscoreronbothsideswasaCzech,JosefFrantisek.
AlsointheRAFwasaBelgiannamedJeandeSelys.AsmembersofhisfamilyhadbeenmurderedbytheGestapo,thewarwasverypersonalforhim.In1943,hedisregardedordersandflewaloneintoaNazi-occupiedcitytostrafetheGestapobuildingwherehisfatherwasexecuted,andthendroppedafuneralwreath.
第二次世界大戰之初，英國將領多數都不願用外國人駕駛戰機，但由於士兵不足，不得不用。事實證明，表現最優秀的戰機飛行員，不少是外國人。一九四○年不列顛戰役之中，英國皇家空軍和納粹德國空軍在英格蘭南部上空決戰，擊落敵機居英、德雙方之冠的，是捷克籍的約瑟夫．弗朗齊歇克。
此外，英國皇家空軍有一個比利時人，叫讓．德塞利茲。他家人遭蓋世太保毒手，所以，對他來說，戰事簡直是個人復仇的手段。一九四三年，他不理會命令，駕機獨闖納粹佔領的一個城市，向着他父親在那裏遭處決的一棟蓋世太保大樓，低飛掃射，然後擲下喪葬花圈。
