ThenthePolish2ndCorps＊tooktheirplace.Afterthreedaysoffiercefighting,on18May,thePolesraisedthePolishflagonthetopoftheruinsoftheBenedictinemonasterythatcrownedMonteCassino.Itwasacostlyvictory:1000Polishsoldierswerekilledand3000werewounded.APolishcemeterywaserected.Thededicationsays,"You,strangerpassingby,tellPolandthat,forourfreedomandyours,wehavegivenoursoulstoGod,ourbodiestothesoilofItaly,andourheartstoPoland."
一九四三年一月十七日開始，美、英軍隊嘗試攻取卡辛諾山，以突破德國在義大利的古斯塔夫防線，但進攻三次都被擊退。
波蘭第二軍接手進攻，經過三天激戰，到了五月十八日，終於在卡辛諾山巔本篤修道院的敗瓦頹垣上，豎起波蘭旗。勝利的代價十分慘重，波蘭士兵陣亡的有一千人，負傷的有三千人。當地修築了一個波蘭墳場，有題詞說：「路過的陌生人，請向波蘭傳語：為了大家的自由，我們把靈魂付與上帝，肉體付與義大利黃土，赤心付與波蘭。」
＊波蘭一九三九年遭德國、蘇聯瓜分。一九四一年，德軍席捲波蘭，進侵蘇聯，當年遭蘇聯俘虜的波蘭士兵才獲釋放。他們間關萬里，前往歐洲，和盟軍並肩作戰。
