NormandBrissetteandRalphNealdivedintoacesspool,wheretheyremainednosedeepinthemuckuntiltheflamesdieddown.Assoonastheyemerged,theywererecapturedbytheirguards.Theysufferedservereradiationburnsandsurvivedintormentfor13days.Theydiedon19August.
ThethirdAmericanwhosurvivedtheexplosiondiedasascapegoatforthebombing.HewastiedtowhatwasleftoftheAioiBridge*withasignhangingfromhimthatsaid:"BeatthisAmericanSoldierBeforeYouPass."
一九四五年八月六日，代號「小男孩」的原子彈落在廣島上，當時城內關着至少十個原任美國飛行員的戰俘，只有三個沒有在爆炸中死亡。
諾曼德．布里塞和拉爾夫．尼爾跳進化糞池裏，躲在深及鼻子的糞便之中，直到火焰熄滅才走出來，馬上又被守衞抓住。他們遭輻射嚴重灼傷，熬了十三天，八月十九日去世。
第三個沒被炸死的美國人，則做了轟炸的代罪羔羊而死。他被縛在殘缺不全的相生橋上，身上掛着告示說：「不揍這個美國士兵，不要在這裏走過。」
