In1808,thearmiesofNapoleonmarchedthroughSpanishcityafterSpanishcityuntiltheyreachedSaragossa,acitydefendedbysomeoldcannonsandaheavilyoutnumberedforce.Theystormedthecity,andtheSpanishtroopswerebreakingrankswhenawomancalledAugustinadeAragonarrivedontherampartswithabasketofapplestofeedthegunners.SeeingthegunnersabandontheirpostsandtheFrenchafewyardsaway,Augustinaranforward,loadedacannon,andlitthefuse,shreddingawaveofattackersatpoint-blankrange.
ThesightofalonewomanbravelymanningthecannonsinspiredthefleeingSpanishtroopsandothervolunteerstoreturnandassisther.Afterabloodystruggle,theFrenchgaveuptheassault.
