問：Thrive、flourish兩字，意思是相同的嗎？
答：這兩個字都是說生物、事業、機構、社會、文化等等「蓬勃發展」或「繁榮」，但thrive多指全盛前的茁壯，flourish則兼有「茁壯」、「全盛」含義，而由於有「全盛」含義，有時也帶「後來衰落」意味。請看一九七四年版CollinsEnglishLearner'sDictionaryflourish和thrive兩字例句：（1）TheBritishEmpireflourishedinthe19thcentury（十九世紀是英帝國全盛時期）。（2）Hisbusinessisthriving（他的業務蒸蒸日上）。第一句flourished改為thrived或throve，就沒有那麼好；第二句thriving改為flourishing，則完全沒有分別。
問：有人會議上說：Theexistingpolicyis...；會議紀錄上，應作Hesaidtheexistingpolicyis還是was？
答：這樣的問題，常有讀者提出，我也答過不止一次。會議紀錄既言「紀錄」，就應依照reportedspeech（即indirectspeech轉述句法）規定，即會議上的話用現在式或過去式動詞，紀錄上的話須改用過去式或過去完成式。GrahameTBilbow的BusinessWritingforHongKongMinutes（會議紀錄）一章說得很清楚：Thetenseoftheverbinthereportedstatementisnotthesameasitwasintheoriginalspokenstatement（紀錄的言辭，所用動詞時式和原本口頭言辭的動詞時式不同）。例如會議上有人說：Theexistingpolicyisthatcustomersmaynotreturnmerchandiseforarefund（目前的政策，是顧客退貨，我們不會退款）。會議紀錄應改寫如下：Hesaidtheexistingpolicywasthatcustomersmightnotreturnmerchandiseforarefund。
