ManyatrocitieswerecommittedbytheAmericansduringtheinvasionofSicilyin1943.On14July,36prisonersofwarweregunneddownnearGelabytheirguard.USSergeantBarryWest.AtButteraairfield,USCaptainJerryComptonlineduphis43prisonersagainstawall,andmachine-gunnedthemtodeath.WestandComptonwerebotharrestedandconvictedofmurder.Theyweresenttothefront,wherebothwerelaterkilledinaction.
AfterthetownofCanicattisurrendered,somecivilianswerereportedtobelootingaftertheyhadenteredabombedoutsoapandfoodfactory.Ataround6pm,anAmericanofficerandagroupofsoldiersenteredthefactory.Theofficerfiredpoint-blankintothecrowd,killingeightcivilians.Theatrocitywashushedup,andtheperpetratorofthecrime,LieutenantColonelMcCaffrey,diedin1954.
一九四三年美軍攻佔西西里島期間，暴行不少。七月十四日，在傑拉附近，美軍巴里．韋斯特中士槍殺了他守衞的三十六個戰俘。在布泰拉飛機場，美軍傑里．康普頓上尉要他手下的四十三個戰俘沿一道牆排開，然後用機關槍把他們射殺。韋斯特和康普頓後來被捕，判了謀殺罪，送到前線，戰死沙場。
卡尼卡蒂鎮投降之後，據報有平民走進一家炸毀了的肥皂和食物工廠搶掠。下午六點鐘左右，一名美國軍官和一群士兵走進工廠。那軍官向群眾近距離開槍，殺了八個平民。這暴行給隱瞞了。那犯罪的軍官是麥卡弗里中校，一九五四年死去。
