第二次英荷戰爭的起因，是英國要終止荷蘭的世界貿易霸主地位。戰爭期間，一隊荷蘭戰艦一六六七年進攻查塔姆。英艦總司令阿爾伯馬爾公爵眼看荷蘭艦隊迫近，擔心荷蘭軍隊登陸，不惜身先士卒，走到敵人槍火最熾烈處。有人勸他退下，他冷冷的說：「老兄，我要是害怕子彈，早就該退出征戰生涯。」
有一個姓道格拉斯的艦長，奉命無論如何都要守護他的戰艦。戰艦遭荷蘭軍火燒的時候，他寧願死在艦上，都不離去，高喊：「我們道格拉斯家族，從來沒有人未奉命令就離開崗位。」
