答：不錯。解作「社會」的society，是不可數名詞，一般不冠以a，除非指「某種社會」，例如：Herefusestofollowtherulesofsociety/therulesofasocietythatisblindtoreason（他不肯遵從社會的規則/他不肯遵從一個不講道理社會的規則）。同樣，harmony（和諧）是不可數名詞，但也可冠以a，例如：Whatthecommunistscall"harmony"isaharmonybuiltonviolenceagainstthepeople（共產黨所謂「和諧」，是以暴力對付百姓為基礎的和諧）。
問：貴欄說staff是集合名詞（collectivenoun），所以「一個職員」不可說astaff，應說astaffmember或amemberofstaff。然則「三個/四個職員」為什麼可說three/fourstaff？說three/fourstaffmembers可以嗎？
答：Staff除了作集合名詞，也可作複數名詞，所以「公司有十個職員」可以譯做Thecompanyhasastaffoften/tenstaff/tenstaffmembers。除了staff，police（警察）和crew（全體船員或機員）這兩個集合名詞，也可作複數名詞，冠以one以上的數字，例如：（1）Tenpolice（或policeofficers）werepatrollingthestreet（十個警察在那條街上巡邏）。（2）Sixcrew（或crewmembers）werekilledintheengagementwiththepirates（六個船員和海盜戰鬥時被殺）。
一般集合名詞是不可以這樣兼作複數名詞的。
