InFebruary1862,UniongeneralUlyssesGrantledhistroopstovictoryattheBattleofFortDonelson.ThiswastheNorth'sfirstmajorvictoryintheCivilWar,andmadeGrantfamous.Itwasalsothevictorythatkilledhim.
Afterthebattle,numerousarticleswerewrittenaboutthebrilliantgeneral,andhewasrepresentedassmokingacigarinthemidstoftheconflict.PeopleacrosstheNorthsenthimboxesofthechoicestbrandsofcigars.Asmanyas10,000weresoonreceived.
Grant,whowasoriginallyalightsmoker,wrotelater:"IgaveawayallIcouldgetridof,buthavingsuchaquantityonhandInaturallysmokedmorethanIwouldhavedoneundernormalcircumstances,andIhavecontinuedthehabiteversince."
Grantdiedofthroatcancerin1885attheageof63.
一八六二年二月，美國北軍將領攸里西斯．格蘭特率兵在多納爾森堡戰役中取勝。這是南北戰爭之中北軍第一場重要勝利。這場勝利令格蘭特聲譽鵲起，也成為他的催命符。
多納爾森堡一役之後，報刊紛紛報道這位出色將領，說戰酣時他在吸雪茄。一盒盒最上品的雪茄於是從北部各州寄到格蘭特手上，不久就有一萬盒之多。
格蘭特本來不多吸煙。他事後寫道：「我盡可能把那些雪茄送給人，但既然有那麼多，我自然比平常多吸了，而且從此成為習慣。」
一八八五年，格蘭特死於喉癌，死時六十三歲。
