ChasingLeewasUniongeneralGeorgeMcClellan.On13September,whilebivouackedinafieldthathadthedaybeforebeenoccupiedbyConfederates,aUnionprivatefoundinthegrassthreecigarswrappedinapieceofpaper.Hedividedthecigarsamonghiscomrades,andthentookacausalglanceatthepaper.ItwasnothinglessthanacopyofLee'sbattleplanfortheinvasion,whichhadbeendroppedbysomeunknownofficer.
"HereisapaperwithwhichifIcannotwhipBobbyLeeIwillbewillingtogohome,"saidMcClellan.HewentontheattackandtheConfederateswereturnedback.

李將軍之後，是北軍將領喬治．麥克萊倫的追兵。九月十三日，北軍在南軍早一天駐紮的原野上露營，一名士兵在草叢中撿到三支用紙包着的雪茄。他把雪茄和同袍分了，然後隨便看看那張紙，發覺竟然是李將軍北犯的作戰計劃副本，不知給哪個軍官遺留下來。
麥克萊倫將軍說：「有了這分文件，我不能把羅伯特．李打得落花流水，甘願歸隱老家。」他揮兵進攻，擊退了南軍。
