AndthoughtheGIswereissuedwithaglossarytotrytopreventlinguisticmisunderstandings,misunderstandingsstillarose.OneBritishgirlworkingonaUSbaserecalledhowembarrassingitwaswhensheaskedfora"rubber"tocorrectamistake.HerAmericanbossthoughtshewantedacontraceptive.

此外，美國軍人都獲發詞彙表，務求避免語言誤會，但誤會還是會發生。一個英國女郎在一美軍基地工作，談到所經歷的尷尬事：她想改錯，說要rubber（橡皮擦），美國上司卻以為她要避孕套。
當時英國一個流行笑話是：那些美國大兵「薪水過高，性欲過盛，吃得過飽，而且渡海過來了」。
