Tiberiuswasgreatlyastonished,butthenhehadtheunfortunatemandraggedawayandbeheaded,andhisworkplacerazedtotheground.Hewasafraidthatthenewwondermetalwoulddevaluehisfortuneingoldandsilver.
Itwasnotuntilthemid-19thcenturythatthesecretofaluminiumwasrediscovered.
有一天，羅馬一名金屬製品工匠得意洋洋，向提比略皇帝（公元前四十二年至公元三十七年）獻上一個金屬杯子。那不知是什麼金屬，但很可能是鋁。為了表現這金屬的特性，他用力把杯子往地上一摔，摔得杯身大大凹了，然後拿出小錘子，毫不費勁就把所有凹陷地方敲平，杯子看來和新的一般無二。
提比略十分驚訝，但隨即下令把那倒楣工匠拖去斬首，還把他的工場夷為平地。提比略擔心這種奇異的新金屬，會令他擁有的大量金子銀子貶值。
鋁的秘密，要到十九世紀中葉才再度給人發現。
