In1942,theNormandieDockofStNazaireinGerman-occupiedFrancewastheonlyAtlanticseaboardfacilitycapableoftakinginanylargeGermanwarship.SotheBritishdevelopedamostdaringplantodestroytheheavilydefendeddock.
Undertheplan,anolddestroyer,HMSCampbeltownwasloadedwith4.5tonsofhighexplosiveinthebows.On26March1942,thedestroyer,escortedby18shallowdraftboats,setsail,andat1:30amon28MarchrammedintotheStNazairelockgatesandwasblownup.About200RoyalCommandosdisembarkedunderheavyfireanddestroyedotherdockstructures.Allbut27ofthemwerekilledorcaptured.
Despitetheheavycasualties,theraidwasjudgedtobehighlysuccessful.Thedockremainedunusableuntil1947.
一九四二年，法國在德軍佔領下，聖納澤爾港諾曼第船塢是德國大型戰艦在大西洋海岸唯一可以開入的船塢。英國於是制定一個十分大膽的計劃，要把這船塢毀掉。
根據計劃，舊驅逐艦《坎貝爾頓號》在船頭放了四噸半烈性炸藥，一九四二年三月二十六日啟航，由十八艘吃水不深的船護衞，三月二十八日上午一時三十分，直撞入聖納澤爾港的水閘，然後引爆。約二百名英國皇家突擊隊員冒着猛烈砲火上岸，破壞船塢的其他設施，最後只有二十七人脫身，其餘的不是戰死，就是被俘。
這次突擊固然傷亡慘重，但當局仍然認為十分成功。諾曼第船塢到一九四七年才能重新啟用。
