Onthenightof1August1943,USSPT-109waspatrollingtheBlackettStraitintheSolomonIslandswhenaJapanesedestroyercrashedintotheboat,splittingitintwoandsendingitintoflames.
ThecrewofPT-109clungtothewreckageoftheboat.Twowerekilledinthecollision.Elevenotherssurvived,butsome,includingtheskipperJohnKennedy,wereinjured.Atdawn,theystruckoutforasmallislandthreeandahalfmilesaway.
Kennedy,whohadchronicbackproblems,towedabadlyburnedcrewmemberbyholdingtheman'slifejacketbeltbetweenhisteeth.Hisbackwashurtingbadly,andittookfourhoursforhimtoreachthedestination.Atalaterdate,whenaskedtoexplainhowhehadcometobeahero,herepliedlaconically,"Itwasinvoluntary.Theysankmyboat."
一九四三年八月一日晚上，美國魚雷艇一○九號在所羅門群島布萊克特海峽巡邏，被一艘日本驅逐艦撞個正着，斷為兩截，着火焚燒。
魚雷艇的船員緊抓着殘破的船身。那一撞奪去了兩名船員性命，其餘十一人逃過一死，但有些受了傷，包括船長約翰．甘迺迪。到了天亮，他們朝三英里半之外的一個小島游去。
甘迺迪有慢性背患，這時背部痛得厲害，但見一名船員受了嚴重灼傷，就用牙齒咬着那船員救生衣上的帶子，拖着他向前游，游了四小時才到達那小島。後來，有人問甘迺迪怎麼這樣英勇，他簡簡單單說：「那不是自願的。他們撞沉了魚雷艇。」
