Stalinwastakenbysurprise.HehadbeenawareoftheGermantroopbuild-upontheSovietUnion'swesternborder,buthehadputhisfaithinthenon-aggressionpacthehadstruckwithHitlerbeforetheoutbreakofwarinEurope.Underthetermsofthispact,theSovietUnionhadevendutifullysuppliedGermanywithrawmaterialssuchascotton,oil,wood,andmetals.ThelasttrainloadofgrainhadcrossedtheborderbarelyanhourbeforetheGermansmountedtheirattack.
Onhearingoftheinvasion,Stalintookrefugeinhisdachatoconsiderhisresponse.Severaldayspassedbeforehefinallyemergedtogivearadiobroadcastexhortingthepeopletoriseupagainsttheinvaders.
一九四一年六月二十二日凌晨四時，蘇聯獨裁者約瑟夫．斯大林的助手把他叫醒，告訴他說：一小時之前，德國軍隊開始大舉犯邊。
斯大林完全沒有準備。他雖然早就知道德軍在蘇聯西陲雲集，但歐戰爆發之前，他和希特勒簽署了互不侵犯條約，以為可以放心。蘇聯更恪守條約規定，向德國供應棉花、石油、木材、金屬等原料。德軍入侵蘇聯之前一小時，蘇聯還有一列火車滿載穀物開入德國。
斯大林聽到德軍犯境消息之後，躲進他的別墅裏，思量對策，過了幾天才走出來，上電臺呼籲百姓挺身對抗侵略者。
