On25October1944,whentheAmericansweretryingtoreconquerthePhilippines,thedestroyerUSSJohnstonandahandfuloflightsshipsspottedtheapproachofahugeJapanesefleetoffSamar.ErnestEvans,theJohnston'sskipper,headeddirectlytowardstheenemy,andtoldhiscrewovertheintercom:"Thiswillbeafightfromwhichsurvivalcannotbeexpected."
Afterinflictingheavylossesontheenemy,theJohnstonwasreducedtoacompletewreckbygunfire.ButwhenEvanssawaJapanesecruiserbeganpoundingontheUSSGambierBay,hegavethefollowingorder:"Commencefiringonthatcruiser,drawherfireonusandawayfromtheGambierBay."
AsurvivorsawaJapanesecaptainsalutetheJohnstonasshewentdown.Ofhercrewof327,morethan180werelost,includingEvans.
一九四四年十月二十五日，美軍着手奪回菲律賓期間，美國驅逐艦約翰斯頓號和幾艘輕型戰艦在薩馬島附近發現有一支龐大日本艦隊逼近。約翰斯頓號艦長厄尼斯特．埃文斯馬上趨前迎戰，並在通信系統上告訴手下：「這一戰，不能指望生還。」
約翰斯頓號使日軍受創不輕，但本身也被砲火打得殘破不堪。這時，埃文斯看見一艘日本巡洋艦對美艦甘比爾號展開猛裂轟擊，就下令說：「向那艘巡洋艦開火，把他們攻擊甘比爾號的砲火引到我們這邊。」
約翰斯頓號沉沒時，一名生還者看見日軍一個艦長向他們致敬。約翰斯頓號三百二十七名船員之中，超過一百八十人喪生，包括埃文斯。
