TheJapanesehardlyrealisedthejaw-droppingextentoftheenormouscapacityandefficiencyoftheUnitedStates'warproduction,whichcanbesummedupinoneline:TheFordMotorCompanyalonecouldproducemoremilitaryequipmentthanItaly.
SpecialmentionshouldalsogotoHenryFord'sgreatproject,knownas"WillowRun".HeofferedtobuildtheUnitedStatesgovernmentafactorythatcouldproduceonefour-engineheavybombereveryhour.Almosteveryonethoughtitwasimpossible,andtheywerecorrect.WilliamRundidnotaverageonebomberevery60minutes.Itaveragedonebomberevery63minutes.
一九四一年十二月七日，日本偷襲珍珠港，引致美國參與第二次世界大戰。日本搶先出手的原因之一，是以為美國戰鬥力不能持久。
但日本人不明白美國的戰爭生產力。這龐大生產力多麼驚人和有效率，可用一句話說明：單是福特汽車公司，可生產的武器，已經勝過全義大利。
特別值得一提的，是亨利．福特的「柳徑」大計。他提議為美國政府建造一座工廠，每小時可生產一架四引擎重型轟炸機。幾乎沒有人相信這計劃可以實現，而他們也沒有錯。柳徑生產一架轟炸機的平均時間不是六十分鐘，而是六十三分鐘。
