On1May1943,duringaraidontheNaziU-boatpenatSt-Nazaire,France,aUSbomberwasbadlyhitandburstintoflames.Thefiredrovebothwaistgunnerstobailout.ButMaynardSmith,theball-turretgunner,castasidehisownparachute,gavefirstaidtotwowoundedcrewmembers,andthentackledthefirewithextinguishers.
Whilehewasfightingthefire,hisplanecameunderattackbyacoupleofGermanfighters.Sohemannedbothwaistgunsinturn,andfiredawayuntiltheenemyplanesfellback.Hethrewburning100-poundammunitionboxesoutoftheplane(heweighedaround130pounds),andwhenhehadusedupthelastfireextinguisherhebeatoutthelastflameswithhishands.ForhisbraveryhewasawardedtheMedalofHonour.
一九四三年五月一日，一架美國轟炸機空襲法國聖納澤爾的納粹潛艇塢，受到重創，飛機着火，火勢甚猛，機身中部兩個機槍手惟有緊急跳傘逃生。但球形塔機槍手梅納德．史密斯卻把自己的降落傘扔到一旁，為兩個受傷機員急救，然後用滅火器救火。
這邊他在救火，那邊他的轟炸機卻受到幾架德國戰鬥機襲擊。史密斯於是用機身中部兩挺機槍輪流掃射，直到敵機退卻。他把一百磅重正在燃燒的火藥盒一一扔到飛機外（他自己體重約一百三十磅），用完最後一個滅火器之後，就用手把餘火撲滅。由於勇敢，他後來獲頒榮譽勳章。
