On8December1941,thesamedayastheattackonPearlHarbour,theJapaneseattackedWakeIsland.DuringthreestraightdaysofJapanesebombing,USMarineandciviliandefenderstrickedthebombersintobombingfakepositions.
BelievingthattheyhadknockedoutallAmericandefencesontheisland,aJapanesefleetwenttotakeWakeIslandwithoutanyairsupport.TheMarinecommanderwaiteduntiltheshipswerewithinartilleryrange,andthenorderedhismentoopenfire,sinkingonedestroyerinlessthan15seconds.Thefleetthenretreatedoutofthegunrange,onlytobeattackedbythefourAmericanairplanesthatwerestillintact.Theplanessankanotherdestroyer,forcingtheJapanesetoretreatevenfurther.ThiswasthefirstAmericanvictoryinWorldWarII,thoughJapanwouldtaketheislandlaterthatmonth.
一九四一年十二月八日，日本偷襲珍珠港，並於同一天進攻威克島，連續轟炸了三天。島上美國海軍陸戰隊和參與抗敵的平民用計，使日本轟炸機誤炸了偽目標。
日軍以為島上所有美國防禦設施已告摧毀，派艦隊前去佔據威克島，也不用空軍支援。美國海軍陸戰隊指揮官待日本戰艦進入大砲射程之後，才下令開火，不過十五秒鐘，就擊沉一艘驅逐艦。日本艦隊退到大砲射程之外，不料又被四架仍然完好的美國戰機攻擊，再有一艘驅逐艦沉沒，只得再往後退。這是第二次世界大戰美軍的第一場勝仗。不過，同一個月內，威克島終於落在日本手上。
