第一次世界大戰期間，邱吉爾曾到法國觀察戰情，在前線藏身處，接到一位過去相識的將軍傳言，邀約見面。他得步行大約三英里，到一十字路口，有汽車會前來接他。邱吉爾在路口等了一小時之後，一個軍官到來，告訴他說，汽車錯去了另一十字路口，而會面時間已經過去。
邱吉爾一邊咒駡那將軍，一邊冒雨在黑夜裏辛辛苦苦往回走，走到藏身處，才知道他出發五分鐘之後，一枚砲彈落下來，藏身處屋頂洞穿，藏身處內那個男人也被炸死。邱吉爾後來有記述說：「我對X將軍的憤恨突然冰消。」不但如此，他還對那將軍十分感激。
