Themanagerofthebank,afriendofKoster's,promptlyshovedsomemoneyintohispocketandtoldhimtogodirectlytothetrainstationandleaveGermany.Kostertooktheadvice,andmadehiswayfirsttoFranceandthentoAmerica.
Ironically,duringthewar,Koster,asaGermancitizen,wasconsideredanenemyalienandwaskeptunderpartialhousearrest.Hehadtostayinhishouseintheevening.
電影導演亨利．科斯特一九○五年生於柏林。德國落入納粹黨手上之後，他成為反猶太運動的目標。一九三三年，科斯特一天午飯時間在銀行裏被一名納粹黨衞軍官出言侮辱，辱及他家族以及文化傳統。科斯特按捺不住，把那軍人打昏了。
銀行經理和科斯特有交情。他馬上把些錢塞進科斯特的口袋裏，着他馬上去火車站，搭車離開德國。科斯特聽了他的意見，先到法國，然後去美國。
令人啼笑皆非的是，第二次世界大戰期間，科斯特由於是德國公民，被視為敵國僑民，遭有限度軟禁，晚上得留在家中。
