DuringtheAmericanCivilWar,hischurchraisedandequippedavolunteerinfantryregiment.HeoncewentonaspeakingtourinEnglandtounderminesupportfortheSouthbyexplainingtheNorth'swaraims.WhileaddressingacrowdofrebelsympathisersinManchester,Beecherwasaskedadifficultquestion:"Whydidn'tyouwhiptheConfederatesin60days,asyousaidyouwould?"
"Because,"hereplied,"wefoundwehadAmericanstofightinsteadofEnglishmen."
亨利．比徹是十九世紀美國公理會著名牧師，對奴隸制度深惡痛絕，南北戰爭前，致力籌款為反對奴隸制度者買武器，買得的步槍後來就稱為「比徹聖經」。
南北戰爭期間，公理會招募並裝備了一個志願步兵團。比徹曾到英國四處演講，解釋北方聯盟的戰爭目標，以免英國人支持南部聯邦。他在曼徹斯特向一群南部支持者致辭時，有人刁難說：「你們說過六十天內會打敗南軍，怎麼到現在都未能取勝？」
比徹回答說：「因為我們發覺對敵的是美國人，不是英國人。」
