美國民眾意氣不平，對英國有利，英國於是散播謠言，說德國一些地區的學校放假，慶祝擊沉盧西塔尼亞號。這謠言十分奏效，美國駐德大使詹姆斯．哲羅德甚至沒有查證，就在駐德回憶錄中當作事實記下來。英國還造謠說，炸沉盧西塔尼亞號的潛艇上所有船員，都獲德國當局頒贈炸船紀念章。
