貴欄《一代名妃》文中有theplainfacedCatherine（相貌平庸的凱瑟琳）這寫法，plainfaced可寫作plain-faced嗎？據我所知，名詞之前，兩個字連起來的形容詞須用連字號（hyphen），而第二字還須加ed，例如amany-splendouredring（色彩斑斕的戒指）。
讀者說的連字號用法並沒有錯，theplain-facedCatherine這寫法當然正確。不過，只要不引起誤會，連字號有時會略去。所以TheMentorGuidetoPunctuation（良師叢書標點用法指南）第六章說：Whenanexpressioniseasytoreadandmeaningisclear,hyphensarenotnecessary（易讀易明的詞語，不一定要連字號）。例如Webster'sCompactWritersGuide（韋氏寫作要津）第三章Compounds（複合字）一節既有internationally-knownauthors（國際知名作家），也有publicallysupporteduniversities（公立大學）；同一章有higher-than-anticipatedcosts（高於預料的費用），TheMentorGuide第六章則有alongerthanusuallunchperiod（較平時長的午餐時間）。麥美倫出版社TheGoodEnglishGuide（英語指南）hyphens條下引述的一句話很有意思：Ifyoutakehyphensseriouslyyouwillsurelygomad（假如認真看待連字號，一定會發瘋）。
其實，連字中的最後一字，也未必要加ed。例如第七版《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》storey條下有atwo-storeybuilding（兩層樓房），也有afour-storeyedbuilding（四層樓房）。Theplain-facedCatherine改為theplain-faceCatherine，文法同樣沒有問題。
