看電影，聽到Ilovehim,butIamnotinlovewithhim一語，是什麼意思？
Love（愛）有多種意思：愛父母、子女、師長、學生、朋友甚至甜食，都可以用love來說，即toloveone'sparents/children/teachers/students/friends以及tolovesweetfoods。Inlove則多是指男女的戀愛，特別是婚前那種郎情妾意。愛父母，你不會說Iaminlovewithmyparents。讀者聽到的那一句，意思是「我愛他，但那不是男女間的愛情」。不少夫婦離婚時都會說類似的話：Istilllovehim/her,butIamnolongerinlovewithhim/her（我仍然愛他/她，但往日的熱戀已經消逝）。
也許，我們可以說loving是持久深厚的愛，beinginlove則只是短暫的迷戀。所以GodfreyHoward在TheGoodEnglishGuidelove條下說："Loving"isadeeperexpressionoffeelingbetweenpeople,while"inlove"suggestsatemporaryinfatuation。
報紙報道會考成績，以Luckythirteenflushwithsuccessascheatsfailtoprosper為標題。什麼叫flushwithsuccess以及failtoprosper？
Flush或flushed作形容詞，有「興奮」或「自豪」的意思；prosper則是「興隆」或「成功」，例如：（1）Ourteamwasflush/flushedwithvictory（我們球隊得勝，意氣風發）。（2）Heprosperedinbusiness（他生意成功）。報紙那標題的意思就是：「十三個幸運兒試場得意，作弊者則不得逞。」
