RudolfHesswasanardentfollowerofHitler,andonthedayGermanylaunchedWorldWarⅡ,HitlernamedhimsecondtoHermannGoringinthelineofsuccession.Hecreatedaworldwidesensation,therefore,whenin1941hestoleanairplaneandflewfromGermanytoScotlandinanattempttonegotiateapeaceagreementwithBritain.HispeaceproposalswererejectedoutrightbybothHitlerandtheBritishgovernment.
HesswasheldinBritainuntiltheNurembergwarcrimestrials,1946,whenhewasgivenalifesentence.HeeventuallybecametheonlyinmateinBerlin'sSpandauprison,buttheUSSRrejectedappealsforhisrelease.Hediedin1987.Itwasofficiallystatedthathehadcommittedsuicidebystranglinghimselfwithanelectriccord,butsomebelievehewasmurdered.

赫斯被囚禁英國。到了一九四六年，他被紐倫堡戰爭罪行法庭判處終生監禁。後來，柏林施潘道監獄內，就只剩下赫斯這個囚犯，但蘇聯拒絕釋放他的呼籲。一九八七年，赫斯去世，據官方說，他用電線自勒身亡。可是，有人認為他是遭謀殺的。
