ThewarbetweentheVietMinhandtheFrenchafterfailureofnegotiationsforVietnameseindependenceendedwiththeBattleofDienBienPhu,1954,whichbrokeFrenchresistance.
DienBienPhusawoneofthemostbizarrehappeningsinmodernwarfare.Duringthecourseofthebattle,about2000Frenchsoldiers,mainlyAlgerian,MoroccanandVietnameseirregulars,announcedtotheircommandersthattheyweredeserting.Andtheircommanders,withGallicfatalism,letthemgo.
Buttherewasnoplaceforthemtogo,astheFrenchweresurroundedonallsidesbytheVietMinh.Sothedesertersdeserted--tothemiddleofthecamp---andmadethemselvesascomfortableaspossiblewhilethefightingragedaroundthem,drainingthedwindlingresourcesofthebase,andrelaxingwiththearmyprostitutes.
越南獨立談判失敗後，越盟和法國戰爭爆發，到一九五四年奠邊府之役結束。法軍經此一役，抗戰能力崩潰。
奠邊府戰役中，發生了些現代戰場上罕見的怪事。戰鬥期間，約二千個法國士兵告訴指揮官說，他們準備逃走：這些士兵多數是阿爾及利亞、摩洛哥以及越南裔非正規軍人。而指揮官竟然以法國人聽天由命精神，放他們離去。
但法軍被越盟四面包圍，逃兵無處可逃，於是逃到營地中央，在四面激戰聲中，盡量安頓下來，進一步消耗營地越來越少的物資，並和軍妓交歡。
