"Quaker"isapopularnameforamemberofaChristiansectnamedtheSocietyofFriendsandfoundedbyGeorgeFoxinmid-17thcenturyEngland.FoxrebelledagainstthestatecontroloftheChurchofEngland,andarguedthatconsecratedbuildingsandordainedministerswereirrelevanttotheindividualseekingGod.HisfollowersrefusedtoattendAnglicanservicesorpaytithes.ThisresultedinFoxbeingarrested.AccordingtoFox'sjournal,JusticeBennet"wasthefirstthatcalledusQuakers,becauseIbadethemtrembleatthewordoftheLord".
Foxwasimprisonedonseveraloccasions.DuringthereignofCharlesII,13,562Quakerswerearrestedandimprisoned,and198transportedasslaves.ButtheSocietyofFriendscontinuedtogrow.
「戰慄教徒」是一基督教派信徒的俗稱。該教派名為「教友派」，是十七世紀中葉喬治．佛克斯在英格蘭創辦的。佛克斯不滿英格蘭教會由政府控制，認為個人追隨上帝，不須要奉為神聖的建築和特別委任的牧師。他的信徒拒絕參加英格蘭教會的禮拜，也拒絕向教會繳納十一之稅。佛克斯於是被捕。據他的日記說，貝湼特法官是「第一個叫我們做戰慄教徒的人。因為我囑咐他們慄慄危懼聽天主言」。
佛克斯坐了好幾次牢。查理二世在位期間，有一萬三千五百六十二個戰慄教徒被捕入獄，並有一百九十八個教徒被流放做奴隸。但教友派信徒卻一天天多起來。
【附注】Quaker這諢名原帶嘲笑含義，但現在已成為教友派信徒的半正式稱呼。
