FormanyyearsaftertheBritishhadgainedcontrolofIndia,thethugscontinuedtopractisetheirtradeunchecked.Finally,anarmyofficernamedWilliamSleemanpointedoutthatitwasirresponsibleofanygoverningbodytoletthisgoon.Ignoredbyhissuperiors,hetransferredtotheCivilService,wherehegainedenoughauthoritytogatheraforceofIndianpolicemen,andproceededtorootoutthecult.Hesucceededbeyondanyone'sexpectations.Bytheendofthe19thcentury,theBritishwereabletodeclarethesectextinct.SleemanwashailedasaherobymostofIndia.
英文借用了不少印度字,其一是thug(強徒)。所謂強徒,本是指一印度教派的信徒,崇拜破壞女神卡利,以殺人越貨為祭祀,遭他們毒手的,估計每年有四萬人。
英國控制印度之後,多年來任由這些強徒作惡。最後,一個叫威廉.斯利曼的軍官指出,任何負責任政府,都不可能讓這情況繼續下去。他的話不獲上司理會。斯利曼於是轉投政府文職機構,取得權力,組成一支印度人警察隊,着手剷除卡利崇拜,十分成功,那是任何人都始料不及的。到了十九世紀末葉,英國人宣布強徒教派已告滅絕。印度多數人都稱讚斯利曼是個英雄。
