FormanyyearsaftertheBritishhadgainedcontrolofIndia,thethugscontinuedtopractisetheirtradeunchecked.Finally,anarmyofficernamedWilliamSleemanpointedoutthatitwasirresponsibleofanygoverningbodytoletthisgoon.Ignoredbyhissuperiors,hetransferredtotheCivilService,wherehegainedenoughauthoritytogatheraforceofIndianpolicemen,andproceededtorootoutthecult.Hesucceededbeyondanyone'sexpectations.Bytheendofthe19thcentury,theBritishwereabletodeclarethesectextinct.SleemanwashailedasaherobymostofIndia.

英國控制印度之後，多年來任由這些強徒作惡。最後，一個叫威廉．斯利曼的軍官指出，任何負責任政府，都不可能讓這情況繼續下去。他的話不獲上司理會。斯利曼於是轉投政府文職機構，取得權力，組成一支印度人警察隊，着手剷除卡利崇拜，十分成功，那是任何人都始料不及的。到了十九世紀末葉，英國人宣布強徒教派已告滅絕。印度多數人都稱讚斯利曼是個英雄。
