Quarters（宿舍）、premises（房產）等字，必須以s結尾，但未必是指多所宿舍或房產。假如只說一所，可不可以說aquarters或apremises？假如不可，應怎樣說？
Quarters不一定指「宿舍」，還可指其他住所，尤其是短期住所，例如：Whileourhousewasbeingrenovated,wefoundquartersatacheaphotel（房子裝修期間，我們到一家廉價旅館居住）。
Quarters、premises等，一般不可冠以a。一九七一年六月二日《華爾街日報》有以下一句：TheIRSpadlockedapremisesandwasorderedtopayrentastheoccupant（國內收入署用掛鎖把一座建築物鎖上，被視為租用，奉命繳交租金）。但這不是標準用法。Webster'sDictionaryofEnglishUsage指出：Suchusagehasacertainlogictoit,butitistoouncommontobeconsideredstandard（這用法有點道理，但太不尋常，要非正格）。《華爾街日報》這例子也可說明，英文沒有aquarters、apremises這個意思的說法。要說「宿舍中的一個單位」、「建築物一部分」等，須配另外一些字，例如：（1）Theywereallocatedaunitinthestaffquarters（他們獲得職員宿舍一個單位）。（2）Thenewtenantwantedtosubletasmallpartofthepremises（新的租戶想把建築物一小部分分租）。
Premises或quarters可冠以the或these，但也可不用冠詞，例如：（1）Weliveincrampedquarters（我們的住所很局促）。（2）Thesepremisesareheavilyguarded（這裏的建築物警衞森嚴）。
