Hedrilledhiswarriorsrigorouslyandforcedthemtogobare-footed,whichallowedthemtorunfasterandsurprisetheenemy.Hemadethemrunonbedsofthorns,andanymanwhocriedcutinpainwaskilled.

祖魯族國王沙卡是近代非洲最具影響力的軍事領袖。他革新非洲的戰爭方式，祖魯族因此稱霸十九世紀非洲。沙卡用適合肉搏戰的短矛取代擲向敵人的輕標槍，又設計了一種大盾，其左緣可用來把敵人的盾鈎向右方，使敵人露出肋骨部位，可以一矛奪命。
沙卡給戰士的訓練非常嚴格，強迫他們赤腳走路，這樣跑起來會快一點，令敵人措手不及。他要戰士在荊棘滿布的地上走，喊痛者一律處死。
沙卡治下人數最初不過一千五百，最後增至二十五萬。
