Inthe1960s,whentheColdWarwasatitsheight,theCIAtriedtoturncatsintobugsforlisteninginonSovietdiplomatsinpublicplaces.Abatteryandamicrophonewereimplantedintoacat,andanantennaintoitstail.Andtopreventitfromwanderingoffinsearchoffood,theCIAimplantedadevicetosuppressthecat'ssenseofhunger.Thecatwastrainedtoapproachselectedindividualsoncommand.Thetrainingandtestingwentwell.
Thecat'sfirstmissionwaseavesdroppingontwoSovietdiplomatsinaparkacrosstheSovietcompoundinWashington,DC.Thecatwasreleasednearby,anditwascrossingthestreetwhenitwasrunoverbyataxiandkilled."ProjectAcousticKitty",whichinvolvedfiveyearsofworkandtheexpenditureof$14million,diedwiththecat.
一九六○年代是冷戰最激烈的時代。當時美國中央情報局想把貓變成竊聽器，竊聽蘇聯外交官在公共地方的談話。他們在貓身上植入電池、麥克風，並在尾巴植入天線。為免貓離開目標去找尋食物，還植入抑制飢餓感覺的裝置。他們訓練這隻貓接到命令就走近選定的人。訓練、測試都很成功。
竊聽貓的第一個任務，是竊聽華盛頓蘇聯使館對面公園裏兩個蘇聯外交官的談話。中情局人員在公園附近把貓放出。竊聽貓過馬路的時候，給一輛的士撞死了。「聲波貓計劃」花了五年工作以及一千四百萬美元，就此和貓的性命一起結束。
