SoChaplainJamesO'NeillsatdownandwroteaprayerbeseechingtheAlmightyto"grantusfairweatherforbattle".PattonlikedtheprayerandorderedO'Neilltoprint250,000copiesfordistributiontotheentireThirdArmy."Chaplain,Iamastrongbelieverinprayer,"hesaid.
On22December,soonafterthesoldiershadreceivedtheprayercards,theweeks-longcloudcoverdisappeared.Sixdaysofperfectweatherfollowed,duringwhichtheThirdArmyinflictedacrushingdefeatontheGermans.
一九四四年冬，盟軍礙於雨雪、濃霧、洪水，無法攻入德國。十二月八日，美國第三集團軍司令喬治．巴頓將軍打電話給第三集團軍牧師說：「我們和德軍作戰之外，還要和泥濘、洪水搏鬥，實在惱人。看看可不可以叫上帝幫幫忙。」
詹姆斯．歐尼爾牧師於是坐下來，寫了一篇禱詞，懇求萬能的上帝「賜我們作戰的好天氣」。巴頓將軍喜歡這篇禱詞，命令歐尼爾印二十五萬份，派給第三集團軍全體士兵。他說：「牧師，我十分相信祈禱的力量。」
