On15February,afterthevotetohaveLyontossedoutfailed,Griswoldtookmattersintohisownhands.HewalkedupbehindLyonandbeganbeatinghimwithacane.Lyon,protectinghisheadandfaceaswellashecould,retreatedtothefireplace,tookupthefiretongs,andflailedback.IttooksometimefortheotherHousememberstoseparatethetwo.
美國國會第一宗暴力事件發生於一七九八年。當年一月三十日，佛蒙特州代表馬修．萊昂談到康乃狄克州，語帶輕蔑。該州代表羅傑．格里斯沃爾德十分不滿，還以顏色，叫萊昂做「膽小鬼」。萊昂為了證明自己絕不膽小，就向着格里斯沃爾德的面孔吐口水。
二月十五日，把萊昂逐出國會的議案遭否決之後，格里斯沃爾德實行自己解決問題。他走到萊昂背後，舉棍就打。萊昂一面盡力護着頭、臉，一面退到壁爐邊，拿起火鉗還擊。其他國會議員花了些時間才能把兩人拉開。
