ThefireeventuallycostNerohislife.Thehugereconstructionprojectwasnevercompleted,partlybecauseNerospentsomuchmoneyonhimselfwhilecitizensstarvedandthemilitarywentunpaid.In68AD,Romerevolted.AmessengerfromtheSenateinformedtheemperorthathehadbeendeclareda"publicenemy"andwouldbepunishedintheancientstyle--strippednakedandfloggedtodeathwithrods.Wisely,Nerocommittedsuicide.
羅馬皇帝尼祿以殘暴著稱。據說，公元六十四年，他火燒羅馬城，因為不喜歡城內建築物殘舊以及街道狹窄。那場火燒了六日七夜。尼祿喜歡音樂，在米西納斯塔上望着他所謂「美麗的火焰」，把《伊利昂城覆亡》之歌由頭到尾唱了一遍。
尼祿最後因這場火喪命。龐大的重建計劃始終未能完成，原因之一，是他把錢多花在自己身上，不管市民挨餓，也不管軍隊沒有糧餉。公元六十八年，羅馬人起義，元老院遣使者告訴尼祿說，宣布了他是「公敵」，將按古代方式懲處，即脫光衣服，亂棍打死。尼祿還算聰明，自殺死了。
