查字典，premise是「前提」，premises則是「建築物及其土地」，但不少公文都以inthepremises來說前提，不說inthepremise，那說法有沒有錯？
指「建築物及其土地」的premises沒有單數形式，一個小房間也可以叫premises，例如：Thecompany'spremisesmeasured15feetby20feet（公司房產面積寬十五英尺，長二十英尺）。
指「前提」的premise是可數名詞（countablenoun），「大小前提」就是majorandminorpremises。換言之，premises不一定解作「建築物及其土地」，例如：（1）Inthepremises,Ibelievehehasnorighttoclaimagainstthebankforanysuchloss（根據上述前提，我認為他無權要求銀行賠償這樣的損失）。（2）Thereisanerrorinthepremise,whichmakeshisargumentuntenable（他的議論前提錯了，所以站不住腳）。
《聖經．創世紀》有一句說：Afterhehadwashedhisface,hecameoutand,controllinghimself,said,"Servethefood."（他洗臉後，走出來，強忍情緒，說：「擺飯吧」。）這一句下半截為什麼不寫作hecameout,controllinghimself,andsaid？
英文說兩件同時發生的事，其一常用ing動詞而不用and把兩個動詞連接，例如Sheblushedandsmiled（她面紅耳赤，微微一笑）可改作Sheblushed,smiling或Smiling,sheblushed。《創世紀》那一句，hecameoutand,controllinghimself,said等於hecameout,andhecontrolledhimselfandsaid。假如改為hecameout,controllinghimself,andsaid，那等於Hecontrolledhimselfandcameout,andhesaid，也即「他強忍情緒走出來」，不是「他強忍情緒說」。
