Whether和whetherornot有什麼分別？
Whether用於間接問句（indirectquestion），有「會不會」、「是不是」、「可不可以」等含義，其後不一定要加ornot。加上ornot，有強調問題的作用。例如：HeaskedwhetherMarywasgoing（ornot）/Heaskedwhether（ornot）Marywasgoing（他問，瑪麗會不會去）。留意ornot假如置於句末，那whether可用if取代；但假如置於whether之後，則不可用if取代whether，即可說HeaskedifMarywasgoingornot，不可說HeaskedifornotMarywasgoing。
有時，whether之後有一大段文字，句末就不宜加ornot，例如：IamnotsurewhetheritwastheGreekswhosaidthatevilwasaninevitablepartofhumanlife（我不能肯定「邪惡是人生無可避免的一部分」這說法，是不是古希臘人提出的）。這一句ornot可加在whether之後，但假如置於句末，就難和whether接上。
LongmanGuidetoEnglishUsage認為：If"ornot"canbeomittedafter"whether",itisneatertoleaveitout（Whether之後假如可以略去ornot，略去會令句子簡潔一點）。英文學者RudolfFleschTheABCofStylewhetherornot條下也說："Ornot"isoftenunnecessary（ornot二字一般不必要）。這兩句話，讀者不妨記取。
不過，假如要說「無論是……還是……」，那麼，為了加強「無論」的語氣，whether之後一般會用ornot，例如：Iamgoingtotakepart,whetherornotIhavehissupport/WhetherIhavehissupportornot（我無論有沒有他支持，都會參加）。留意這個意思的whether不可用if取代。
