Rebeccahadaboldidea.Therewereafifeandadruminthelighthouse.Shegrabbedthefifeandhandedthedrumtoher16-yearoldsisterAbigail.Thetwoyoungwomenthendashedoutside.
Hidingbehindsometrees,AbigailandRebeccaplayed"YankeeDoddle"foralltheywereworth.TheBritish,thinkingthatthesoundsignalledtheapproachofthetownmilitia,retreatedhastily.
一八一四年九月英美交戰期間，英國一艘戰艦開到麻薩諸塞州錫楚埃特鎮附近。錫楚埃特鎮燈塔看守員的二十二歲女兒莉貝卡．貝茨見到了，還見到兩條小船放落海上，滿載士兵。她父親當時不在，而要到鎮上告警也來不及了。
莉貝卡有一個大膽的主意。燈塔裏有一支軍笛和一個戰鼓。她抓起軍笛，把戰鼓交給十六歲的妹妹阿比蓋爾。兩人隨即跑到燈塔外。
她們躲在樹後，拚命奏起一曲《揚基．都德》。英軍聽到樂聲，以為鎮上民兵來了，連忙撤退。
【附注】《揚基．都德》是美國獨立戰爭時期流行的民歌。這首歌其實應是英國傳過去的，寫美國人的土包子相，不知為什麼卻獲得他們喜愛。
