TherewasanAmericansoldiernamedPeterFrancisco,whowasnotedforhisgreatsizeandstrength.SeeinganAmericancannonbeingleftbehind,hecrouchedbeneaththe1100-poundcannon,lifteditontohisshoulder,andcarriedittoapositionbeingheldbytheContinentals.Hethenretiredtoastandoftrees,wherehewasapproachedbytwoBritishcavalrymen.Inasplitsecond,heknockedoneofthemfromhissaddlewithhisemptymusket,andthrusthisbayonetintotheotherman.Hepickeduponeofthecavalrymen'sswords,mountedhishorse,andgallopedaway.Onhisway,hesawhisowncolonelbeingledawaybytworedcoats.Sohecharged,cuttingdownbothofthem,andthenpresentedhishorsetothecolonel.Bothescaped.
一七八○年八月十六日，南卡羅來納州卡姆登一帶天剛破曉，缺乏戰鬥經驗的美國民兵遭英軍突襲，大敗潰逃。
美軍有個士兵叫彼得．弗朗西斯科，以體格魁梧孔武有力著稱，看見同袍拋下一尊大砲，就蹲下來，把一千一百磅重的大砲托在肩上，送到美軍陣地，然後退到樹下。兩名英國騎兵走到他跟前。電光石火之間，他用手上沒有子彈的步槍把一人打下馬來，再用刺刀插中另一人，抓起其中一人的長劍，奪過馬來跨上，疾馳而去，路上看見兩個英兵押着他的上校，就衝上前，把他們砍倒，並把坐騎讓給上校。兩人都逃脫了。
