第一次世界大戰時，英、德兩國由於海軍力量薄弱，決定把一些超級豪華郵輪改裝為戰艦，即使其槍砲射程不遠都不計較。德國的特拉法加角號把一個大煙囱拆去，喬裝為英國郵輪卡曼尼亞號，希望有機會靠近敵船，近距離以機槍攻擊。巧得很，卡曼尼亞號則喬裝為特拉法加角號。兩艘船一面改裝，一面朝着似乎不可能降臨的命運開去：在巴西特林達迪島附近，彼此碰個正着。
