For150yearstheBritishEastIndiaCompanyruledIndiathroughanarmyofIndiansoldierscommandedbyBritishofficers.In1857,theIndiansoldiersstartedamutiny,whichledtotheCompany'sdissolutionandthetransferenceofitsadministrativepowerstotheBritishCrown.
TheimmediatecauseofthemutinywasthenewEnfieldrifle.Toloadtherifleasoldierhadtobitethecartridgeopen.Wordspreadamongthetroops,whichcomprisedbothHindusandMuslims,thatthepapercartridgesweregreasedwithlard,regardedasuncleanbyMuslims,orbeeffat,regardedassacredbyHindus.Outragedbywhattheysawasreligiouspersecution,thesoldiersinBengalmutiniedandkilledtheirBritishofficers,andtheinsurrectionquicklyspreadintotheGangesValleyandCentralIndia.
英國東印度公司統治印度一百五十年，憑的是手下印度軍隊，軍官則由英國人擔任。一八五七年，印度士兵譁變，最後令東印度公司解散，統治權轉到英國王室手上。
兵變的直接原因，是新的埃菲爾德步槍。士兵給這種步槍裝上子彈，須把子彈殼咬開。軍隊中傳言，那些紙製子彈殼不是塗了回教徒視為不潔的豬油，就是塗了印度教徒視為神聖的牛油，而當時軍中既有印度教徒，也有回教徒。孟加拉的士兵認為這是宗教迫害，十分憤怒，率先譁變，殺死他們的英國軍官。叛亂很快就蔓延到恒河流域以及印度中部。
