In1942,theJapaneseinvadedandoccupiedtheAmericanislandsofAttuandKiska.InMay1943,theAmericansretookAttuinabloodbath,andthenheadedforKiska.
On15August1943,the7thDivisionoftheUnitedStatesandthe13thInfantryBrigadeofCanadalandedonoppositeshoresofKiska,unopposedbutexpectinganotherbloodbath.Thickfogmadeitimpossibletoseetheenemy,andsoonheavygunfirewasheard.Aftertwodaysoffiercefighting,inwhich32AmericanandCanadiansoldierswerekilledandmorethan50werewounded,theAlliesfoundoutthattherewasinfactnoenemy.TheJapanese,realisingthattheisolatedislandwasnolongerprotectable,hadslippedawaybeforetheAlliesarrived.AmericansandCanadianshadonlybeenshootingoneanother.
一九四二年，日本攻佔美國阿圖、基斯卡兩島。一九四三年五月，美軍浴血收回阿圖島，然後移師直指基斯卡島。
一九四三年八月十五日，美國第七師在基斯卡島一方登陸，加拿大第十三步兵旅則在另一方登陸，沒有遇上抵抗，但預料會有另一場浴血戰。大霧令他們無法看清敵人。不久，槍砲聲大鳴，他們拚命作戰，打了兩天，其間三十二個美、加士兵陣亡，五十多人受傷。最後，兩國盟軍發覺，島上原來沒有敵人。日軍知道孤島無法據守，早就在盟軍到達之前悄悄溜走。美、加兩國士兵只是向彼此開火。
