On14November1943,theUSSIowawasonherwaytoNorthAfrica,carryingRoosevelttothesummitmeeting.TheescortshipWilliamDPorterwasholdingabattledrillwhenitinadvertentlyfiredatorpedoattheIowa.Asdangeralarmswentoff,theIowamanoeuvredsharplyandavoidedthetorpedo,whichexplodedsome3000yardsastern.Afterwards,theWilliamDPorter'sentirecrewwereplacedunderarrest,andheldforseveraldaysasaclosedsessioninquiryfoundoutwhathadhappened.
Followingthisincident,USshipswouldroutinelygreettheWilliamDPorterwith"Don'tshoot!We'reRepublicans!"
幾乎所有第二次世界大戰畫史，都有美國總統羅斯福和蔣介石、邱吉爾、斯大林會面的照片。但這左右歷史大局的會議差點就告落空。
一九四三年十一月十四日，美國戰艦愛荷華號正開赴北非，送羅斯福去出席這次國家元首會議。護航的威廉迪伊波特號作交戰演習，意外向愛荷華號發射了一枚魚雷。愛荷華號在危險警報警聲中，急轉閃避，魚雷在船尾三千碼左右爆炸。事後，威廉迪伊波特號船員全體被捕，拘留了幾天，其間當局閉門調查發生了什麼事。
這次事件之後，美國船碰到威廉迪伊波特號，都會打個招呼：「別開火！我們是共和黨人！」
【附注】羅斯福是美國民主黨人。上述招呼當然帶戲謔意味：「你們見到民主黨人才開火吧！」
