In1763,aconfederationofIndiantribeslaidsiegetoFortPitt,aBritish-heldpostinwesternPennsylvania.AleaderoftheDelawareIndians,Turtle'sHeart,visitedthefortforameetingwiththeBritish.HesaidavastIndianarmyhadalreadyoverwhelmedthecountryside,buttheDelawarescouldoffertheBritishprotectioniftheywouldabandonthefort.
TheBritishrefused,butthankedtheIndiansprofuselyfortheirconcern.Then,"outofourregardtothem,wegavethemtwoblanketsandahandkerchiefoutoftheSmallpoxHospital.Ihopeitwillhavethedesiredeffect,"wroteaBritishtraderinhisdiary.
Beforelong,asmallpoxepidemicstruckhardamongtheIndianssurroundingFortPitt,killingmanyofthem.
一七六三年，多個印第安部落結盟，圍攻賓夕凡尼亞西部英國人佔據的庇特堡。德拉威族印第安人一個叫「龜心」的領袖到城堡和英國人會面，說印第安大軍已攻取周圍村野，又說英國人只要放棄城堡，德拉威族人就會保護他們。
英國人拒絕了這個提議，但向那些印第安人殷勤道謝，說感激他們關懷。一個英國商人在日記裏談到其後的事：「為了向他們致意，我們送上兩張毛氈和一方手帕，都是從天花病醫院取來的。我希望能收到所望的結果。」
不久，圍攻庇特堡的印第安人之間爆發嚴重天花疫症，死者甚眾。
